The Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway is a 47-mile winding drive from Grand Rapids, Minn. to Effie Minn., on State Highway 38.  Each year, visitors enjoy the byway's numerous recreational, historical, cultural, scenic and interpretive opportunities set against a gorgeous northwoods backdrop of rolling hills, clear lakes, lush evergreens and a variety of hardwoods.

Around every corner and at the bottom of every hill, visitors to the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway will discover a vast array of pleasurable activities that change with every season and range from relaxation to adventure.

This breathtaking route is rich with opportunities to explore and learn.  There are 14 designated sites that provide insight to the rich culture and history of the area, interpret a landmark or unique natural feature, or provide direction to one of the many recreation areas or communities found along the way.

Awarded the prestigious status of National Scenic Byway in 1996, the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway was one of the first 20 National Scenic Byways designated in the United States.  The qualities of this outstanding route make it a "must" to see and experience when traveling in Minnesota.
